ToxIC Presents at ONDCP Emerging Threats Committee Meeting
The Toxicology Investigators Consortium (ToxIC) was invited to present at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Emerging Threats Committee Meeting in Washington, DC on May 13, 2026. The ToxIC team highlighted the essential role of medical toxicologists in identifying and responding to emerging drug threats through multiple toxico-surveillance projects that aim to link comprehensive laboratory testing to their associated clinical effects in near real time.
Dr. Paul Wax presented updates from several federally funded studies, including the Fentalog Study, Substance Checking and ANalysis of New and Evolving Drugs (SCANNED) Overdose Surveillance Program, and the Drug Overdose Toxico-Surveillance (DOTS) Reporting Program, which have provided important insights into the evolving illicit drug supply and the clinical consequences of exposure to fentanyl analogs, novel synthetic opioids, and other emerging substances in the illicit drug supply.
ACMT has been asked to join the Emerging Threats Committee, and our participation underscores the value of medical toxicologists in national surveillance efforts and highlights ToxIC's ongoing contributions to informing public health and policy responses to emerging drug threats.

ToxIC NASBR Publication by Spencer Greene Highlights Real-World Management of Cottonmouth Bites
We’re excited to highlight a new publication from the ToxIC North American Snakebite Registry examining Northern Cottonmouth (water moccasin) envenomations in Texas. The study reviewed 60 cases reported between 2013–2024 and found that cottonmouth bites were characterized primarily by local tissue injury, while gastrointestinal symptoms and hematologic abnormalities were less common. Antivenom was frequently administered and associated with a low rate of acute hypersensitivity reactions. The findings also suggest a trend toward more aggressive treatment in pediatric patients. This work contributes important real-world data to help clinicians better recognize and manage cottonmouth envenomations.
