President's Message

Dear ACMT Colleagues,

As we move through another productive year, I continue to be inspired by the extraordinary work of ACMT members. Through leadership in science, education, clinical care, advocacy, and emergency preparedness, our College continues to advance the specialty of medical toxicology while improving the health and safety of the communities we serve.

In June, the ACMT Board of Directors met to review our strategic priorities and identify new opportunities to strengthen member engagement, advance education and research, expand advocacy, and foster innovation in clinical practice. The accomplishments highlighted below reflect those priorities in action and demonstrate the remarkable commitment of our members and volunteers.

One of the year’s highlights was ACMT’s participation in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Emerging Threats Committee Meeting in Washington, D.C. This meeting focused on the essential role of medical toxicologists in identifying and responding to emerging drug threats through multiple toxico-surveillance projects that aim to link comprehensive laboratory testing to their associated clinical effects in near real time. Dr. Paul Wax and members of the ACMT research community contributed their expertise to these important discussions, reinforcing the growing recognition of medical toxicologists as essential partners in addressing emerging public health threats.

Our Journal of Medical Toxicology continues to raise the profile of our specialty. Springer Nature recently recognized the JMT editorial team with two 2025 Editor of Distinction honors: the Author Service Award for providing an outstanding publishing experience for authors and the Editorial Contribution Award for exemplary stewardship of the peer-review process. Congratulations to our Editors-in-Chief, editorial board, reviewers, and authors for this well-deserved recognition.

Education and preparedness remain central to ACMT’s mission. Under the leadership of Dr. Emily Kiernan, ACMT has launched the Agents of Opportunity educational series in partnership with REAC/TS and with support from the CDC’s Coordinating Office for Environmental Readiness, Response, and Recovery (COER3). Designed for healthcare professionals and first responders, these courses provide practical training in the recognition and management of toxic industrial chemicals, toxic industrial materials, radiological materials, and other hazardous exposures. This collaboration reflects ACMT’s commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness through multidisciplinary education.

Another exciting initiative is the development of the ACMT Network of Medical Toxicology Clinics (NMTC), led by Dr. Nick Nacca. The recent publication of “An ACMT Network of Medical Toxicology Clinics (NMTC): A Proposed Collaboration of Medical Toxicologists to Meet National Emergency Preparedness Needs” in the Journal of Medical Toxicology represents an important milestone. Conceived through the creative leadership of Drs. Matthew Dernbach and Tyler Lopachin, and co-authored by Drs. John Downs, Nicholas Nacca, Paul Wax, and myself, the paper presents a vision for connecting outpatient medical toxicology clinics nationwide to improve access to specialized care while strengthening preparedness for chemical, radiological, occupational, and environmental emergencies. We look forward to expanding this network into a national collaborative that advances patient care, education, research, and emergency preparedness.

We are also encouraged by the renewed momentum within the Occupational and Environmental Toxicology Section, whose members are actively developing new educational initiatives and collaborations that will strengthen this important area of our specialty.

Finally, I encourage every member to participate in the 2026 ACMT Awards nomination process. Our colleagues make extraordinary contributions every day through patient care, research, education, mentorship, advocacy, and service. Recognizing these achievements is one of the best ways we celebrate the excellence of our profession and the people who continue to move it forward.

Thank you for your continued dedication to ACMT and to the specialty of medical toxicology. The accomplishments highlighted here reflect the strength, innovation, and collaborative spirit of our members, and I look forward to all that we will achieve together in the coming year.

ToxIC recently published a new research case report on "An Emerging Synthetic Opioid in the Drug Supply: A Case of Opioid Overdose with Biological Confirmation of Cychlorphine." This rare case of clinical signs of opioid overdose with cychlorphine detected is the first to provide direct evidence linking a non-fatal overdose to cychlorphine exposure.

We encourage all of our members, particularly our new members and fellows, to attend one of our upcoming annual ACMT Orientation webinars.

These engaging, one-hour sessions provide an overview of the many resources, programs, and opportunities available through ACMT. Participants will learn about leadership opportunities, mentorship programs, grants, committees, sections, networking opportunities, and other ways to maximize the value of ACMT membership. We'll also share updates and resources specifically relevant to Fellowship Directors and program administrators.

Travel Awards Available for Medical Students, Residents & Future Medical Toxicologists

Are you a medical student, resident, or trainee interested in medical toxicology? The Medical Toxicology Foundation (MTF) is offering several travel awards to help support attendance at the ACMT Annual Scientific Meeting.

Applications are now open for the Dr. Carol R. Angle Pediatric Toxicology Travel Award, Resident Travel Award, Dr. Michael Shannon Travel Award, and Johnson & Johnson Consumer Health Travel Award.
