ToxIC SCANNED Receives Renewed ONDCP Funding
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has awarded a cooperative agreement to the American College of Medical Toxicology’s (ACMT) Toxicology Investigators Consortium (ToxIC) to support the Substance Checking and ANalysis of New and Evolving Drugs (SCANNED) Overdose Surveillance Program. This marks the second year of funding for the project and will expand surveillance efforts to identify emerging drugs, inform prevention, and guide evidence-based policy.
SCANNED evaluates drug patterns identified in biological specimens collected from emergency department patients and compares these findings with substances identified in drug materials and fatal overdose data. These efforts help advance understanding of the rapidly evolving illicit drug supply. In the upcoming year, patient interviews will be implemented at a subset of participating emergency departments to gather information on drug use patterns, previous overdoses, and substance use disorder treatment history.

New ToxIC DOTS Publication
A new study from the ToxIC Drug Overdose Toxico-Surveillance (DOTS) Reporting Program was published online in Public Health Reports. Drawing on data from 995 patients across 17 U.S. medical centers, the study demonstrates how patient interviews, medical record reviews, and comprehensive blood toxicology testing can strengthen surveillance of severe opioid and stimulant overdoses. Notably, fentanyl was detected in nearly two-thirds of patients who reported using only stimulants highlighting the limitations of relying solely on self-reported drug use or clinical presentation.

New ToxIC NOSE Brief: Cychloriphine: An Emerging Opioid
The latest ToxIC Novel Opioid and Stimulant Exposures (NOSE) Report highlights cychlorphine, an emerging non-fentanyl synthetic opioid, through a naloxone-responsive overdose in a patient who did not know she had taken an opioid. The case highlights the importance of treating suspected opioid toxicity based on clinical findings, even when routine fentanyl and opiate screens are negative.

Applications Open for the February 2027 Medical Toxicology in Industry Rotation
DEADLINE: November 23, 2026
Applications are now open for the February 2027 Medical Toxicology in Industry (MTI) Virtual Fellows Rotation Program! This is a four-week virtual rotation, hosted by Bayer in partnership with the Medical Toxicology Foundation. The goal is to teach the principles of product development from the R&D pipeline, through the regulatory process, to launch and post-market stewardship. The rotation will address the gap in understanding the role of industry and the regulatory oversight of bringing important technology from the academic arena to the public sphere.
Interested fellows should submit a one-page letter of interest, a letter of support from their Fellowship Director, and a current CV/resume. Visit the MTI Program page for application details and additional information.

If you weren't in this field, what would you be doing?
I would be traveling the globe as a professional harpist, playing in an orchestra.
Favorite medical-themed show, book, movie, etc.?
My favorite medical-themed movie is Awakenings (1990). It still gets me every time!
What’s one thing you’re excited to learn at ACMT? One thing I'm especially excited to learn more about is how medical toxicologists approach the rapidly shifting landscape of substance exposures, particularly fentanyl and novel synthetic drugs.
